Difficulty Trends in KMAT Kerala Past Papers: Session 1 vs 2

KMAT 2026 examination students face difficulties because they assume that they need to prepare for two separate tests. But actually, the two tests have different ways to examine. Even though they require different levels of preparation, they share the same content. Students often judge the paper by past years' trends, which section needs speed, and which section is more difficult and needs time. Both sessions are unique in their own pattern. From the past paper, we will try to know the trend and help you out. All the students make mistakes while preparing for both sessions due to the absence of proper planning. Both sessions need different types of preparation and strategy. This article breaks down the difficulty trends between the two sessions in a clear way and will help you out on how to plan smarter and not harder.

Overall Difficulty of KMAT Kerala Session 1 vs Session 2

KMAT Kerala exam Session 1 tends to be marginally tougher on reasoning and data interpretation. In many past papers, the early (Session 1) paper includes more multi-step reasoning sets and Data Interpretation (DI) that require combining information from multiple sources. That increases the difficulty level because those questions take time, even if they aren’t conceptually advanced.

On the other hand, Session 2 often rewards speed and accuracy. The later session frequently emphasises short, high-yield questions, vocabulary, simple arithmetic, and standard verbal reasoning. If you’re fast and steady, Session 2 can feel friendlier.

Difficulty differences are small but meaningful. The gap isn’t poles apart. Both sessions test the same syllabus and core skills. The difference lies only in your preparation and how you solve the question in both sessions. One session will be lengthy, but the other session will judge your speed and accuracy.

Subject-Wise Difference in KMAT Kerala Session 1 & Session 2

In the table below, we have categorised the types of problems that can be asked in different sessions of KMAT Kerala so that you can work accordingly.

Subjects

Session 1

Session 2

Quantitative Ability (QA)

Problems often look like standard algebra or arithmetic but include a small twist (an extra condition or mixed concepts). This increases the time per question.

More questions that reward quick formula recall and fast mental math. These are basically speed maths.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (LRDI):

Expect longer sets, information chaining, and multi-constraint puzzles. These are time sinks but have high rewards if approached methodically.

Several 2–3 question mini-sets appear; they’re less intimidating but penalise careless mistakes.

Verbal Ability

Session 1 may include denser RC passages requiring inference.

Session 2 tends to include shorter, clearer passages.

General Knowledge & Current Affairs

Session 1 may focus on timeless basics.

Session 2 sometimes includes fresher or more pop-culture facts.

These are the expected patterns that were asked in previous years. They may be subject to variation in the upcoming years.

Time Management Differences

In both sessions, everything is different. From planning to the level of questions, there will also be differences in time management. Session 1 requires proper time allocation because of deeper sets. You will get benefits from dedicating time to longer LRDI sets in the first pass. Session 2 rewards even distribution. A balanced per-section timer works well.

Simulate both sessions under test conditions. Try to give mocks where you must attempt complex sets first, and another where you skim and capture quick points. Then you will understand how to tackle questions in a time-bound manner and how to manage time in both sessions.

Common Difficulties that KMAT Aspirants Face

Since this type of exam holds two sessions, students sometimes make common mistakes or face difficulty while judging the questions. These are:

  • Over-sticking to Hard Questions

Some questions are added only to lure you into a trap. The questions appear to be simple, but they are not. And that's the trap that they set, and many students fall into the trap. The lure of a tough DI set can cost multiple easy marks elsewhere. Try to spend less time, and if you feel that it is taking too much time, leave it and move forward.

  • Mistakes With Easy Questions

Short and easy questions make students much more likely to breed overconfidence and careless errors. Double-check simple calculations.

  • Psychological Differences And Exam-Day Mindset

Since there are different sessions with different targets, the mind should be prepared to perform like that only. That comes from practice and some other tips. For instance, sudden changes from sessions require a break. Try to breathe and rest for a few minutes to change the mode of thinking.

How to Design Your Study Plan Around These Trends?

Different sessions require different strategies, so the division of days or hours should also be considered to score well. Since the session requires speed, you should try to practice speed math for 3 days and 2 days of deep-set practice for Session 1. Then, at last, give 1 day to a full mock mixed problem and then review your mistakes for one whole day.

On a monthly basis, after giving all the tests, make a comparison sheet of weak areas for both sessions and revise it. And if you are slow but accurate, then try to focus more on session 1 practice to build stamina and vice versa.

Whether Session 1 throws a beast or Session 2 gifts you easy questions, what matters is adaptable practice. Building both speed and depth is non-negotiable. You’re not alone in feeling nervous. Many aspirants over-index on guessing which session is “easier.” Instead of judging the paper, consistency will be the major concern for the students. Test papers or mocks will be helpful tools for you. Try to use the session 1 paper to sharpen your problem-solving tricks and the session 2 paper for judging your speed.
