How Can International Students Apply to IIMs?

1. Check Eligibility

Ensure you have a bachelor’s degree (min. 3 years) with at least 50% aggregate or equivalent CGPA. Final-year students can also apply.

Some IIMs may ask for equivalent GPA conversion (WES or university-certified).

2. Choose Entrance Exam

Take a valid GMAT or GRE (scores accepted for the past 3–5 years, depending on IIM).

CAT is typically not required for international applicants.

3. Select IIMs

Decide whether to apply to IIM A, B, C, or others based on program type, fees, and admission policies for foreign/NRI students.

Each IIM has its own application portal.

4. Register & Apply Online

Visit the chosen IIM’s official website and complete the International/ NRI applicant form.

Application windows generally run Aug–Jan (varies by IIM).

5. Upload Documents

Submit scanned copies of:

- Passport

- GMAT/ GRE scorecard

- Academic transcripts

- CV/ Resume

- Statement of Purpose (SOP)

- Letters of Recommendation (if required).

Keep documents in PDF format, within the size limits mentioned on the portal.

6. Pay Application Fee

Pay the non-refundable application fee online (amount varies by IIM and category).

Payment is usually via credit/debit card or net banking.

7. Shortlisting

Applications are reviewed based on GMAT/ GRE score, academic record, work experience, and SOP.

Each IIM publishes its shortlist criteria separately.

8. Interview Process

Shortlisted candidates attend a virtual/online interview (sometimes a written test or case analysis too).

Conducted via Zoom/MS Teams/Skype for international students.

9. Final Selection

Evaluation is based on a composite score: GMAT/ GRE, interview, academics, work experience, and diversity factors.

Results are emailed or published on the IIM portal.

10. Admission Offer & Acceptance

Receive an official offer letter if selected. Accept it by paying the initial confirmation fee.

Some IIMs may give only a few weeks to confirm.

11. Visa & Formalities

Apply for an Indian student visa, arrange accommodation, health insurance, and financial proof.

IIMs often assist with hostel allocation and onboarding.

12. Join the Program

Attend orientation and begin classes (usually June/July).

Programs typically last 2 years (MBA/PGP).

Alumni Network

Access to a vast and influential alumni network across industries worldwide.

Alumni presence is still stronger in India than globally.

Cost of Education

MBA at IIMs is more affordable compared to US/ UK B-schools.

For international students, tuition is higher than domestic fees.
