An EWS certificate in India is generally valid for one year from the date of issue. It helps economically weaker sections access reservations in education and government jobs. Renewal is required after expiry to continue availing the benefits. Check your EWS certificate’s validity date carefully.
How Long is an EWS Certificate Valid?

If you are planning to apply for government employment, college admissions, or welfare programs in India under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category, you will benefit if you know the duration of validity of your certificate. An EWS certificate is valid for a financial year (April to March) in almost all states, i.e., once every year, and renewal must therefore be obtained every year to avail the benefits. Other colleges and universities might require a recent EWS certificate up to the date of counselling or the date of application, so this is also a mandatory requirement. Just like every recruitment entry examination, such as the UPSC exam and the state PSCs, which specifically verify the genuineness of the certificates, timely renewal of the certificate will prevent rejection at the document verification time or at the time of admission.

What is the Standard Validity of an EWS Certificate?

An EWS certificate is usually valid for a period of about one year from the date of issue, after which renewal becomes required for continued benefit. For instance, if the certificate is issued on March 18, 2025, it would be valid till March 17, 2026. Both the central and state governments predominantly follow this one-year validity. Check out some other examples below:

EWS Certificate Renewal Guidelines

You can also renew your EWS certificate before the due date to utilise the reservation quota without losing time. The process is simple and the same as your initial application, but you will need to submit the updated income documents and other documents to ascertain your eligibility.

  • Renewal of the certificate has to be undertaken before the due date specified on your existing certificate.
  • Required documents include proof of income, residential address, and caste certificate (if applicable).
  • All state governments have websites, and these websites have an online renewal option through which you can upload your documents yourself and save time from going personally to the offices.
  • The new certificate generally takes 2 to 3 weeks, but this duration may be variable based on the state and workload with the authorities.

EWS Certificate Validity and Usage Important Points

Your EWS certificate generally holds a validity of one year, but the validity is different according to the state or organisation's laws. Do not forget to take extra care of the validity period, especially while applying for exams, jobs, or admissions. Here are some key things to remember:

  • In all the other states except Tamil Nadu, if you get the certificate during a financial year (April 2025, for example), then the certificate will be valid until March 31 of the following year (March 31, 2026).
  • Some exams, like NEET, SSC, or UPSC, may have a cut-off date, and your certificate must be valid on or after the same date.
  • If your document verification or admission arrives after your certificate has already expired, you should renew it to avoid rejection.

Regardless of the circumstances, your EWS certificate does not expire within a year from the issue date or until March 31 of the next financial year, whichever is sooner, under state regulations. As exams, admissions, and recruitments strongly necessitate that the certificate should be valid, keep an eye on the expiry date and renew it well in advance. Being updated keeps you in contention without last-minute hurdles or undue stress.

Dear Student,

Previously, AIIMS conducted its own entrance examination, but now, admissions are based on the NEET-UG exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). So, if you want to apply for other AIIMS, you have to appear for the NEET UG exam
