Get the complete list of JEE Main 2026 Physics high-weightage and low-weightage chapters. Based on the analysis of all shifts from 2021 to 2025, around 60% of the paper comes from selected important topics. Check chapter lists, priority order, and preparation strategy.
JEE Main 2026 Physics High Priority and Low Priority Chapters

JEE Main 2026 will be conducted by the National Testing Agency in two sessions, tentatively scheduled from January 21 to 30, 2026 and April 1 to 10, 2026. The Physics section follows the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus, and the questions include theory-based concepts, numerical-type problems, and mixed-concept applications. Each paper includes 25 Physics questions. Based on JEE Main papers from 2021 to 2025 across all shifts, certain chapters repeatedly carry higher weightage. These high-weightage chapters for JEE Mains 2026 collectively form approximately 60% of the paper, making them important for scoring well. Topics such as Ray Optics, Electrostatics, Modern Physics, Rotational Motion, Thermodynamics, and Kinetic Theory of Gases consistently appear with higher frequency and involve both formula-based and reasoning-based questions.

At the same time, there are chapters that do not appear that much. Topics such as Units and Dimensions, Experimental Physics, Magnetic Properties of Matter, and Thermal Properties of Matter have contributed only a small number of questions in the last few years. Although these are considered low-priority chapters, it is still advisable to study them to avoid conceptual gaps. Some topics, such as selected parts of Fluid Mechanics, specific subtopics of Semiconductors, and smaller areas from Error Analysis or Advanced Magnetostatics, appear even less frequently. Students can revise these later in their preparation plan, but they should maintain a basic understanding so they do not feel stuck if a question appears unexpectedly.

What are the high-weightage chapters for JEE Mains 2026?

The following chapters have been identified as the most important chapters for JEE Mains physics 2026 based on past trends. They contribute the highest number of questions and require detailed study.

First Priority JEE Mains 2026 Physics Chapters (Approximately 60% of total questions)

Based on the 2021-2025 JEE Mains analysis (~2.2 questions per shift):

  • Ray Optics (highest weightage)
  • Modern Physics (around two questions per shift)
  • Electrostatics (important concepts include Coulomb’s Law and Dipole Interaction: p·E, −p·E)
  • Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory of Gases
  • Rotational Motion (focus areas include Moment of Inertia, which contributes about 32% of questions from this chapter, and Angular Momentum, which contributes around 17%)
  • Magnetic Effects of Current
  • Fluid Mechanics (important points include Surface Tension formulas 2S/R or 4S/R, and Terminal Velocity in Viscosity, which covers around 50% of questions from this area)
  • Units and Dimensions, Current Electricity, Semiconductors, Wave Optics, and Capacitance, each contributing approximately one question per shift

Second Priority JEE Mains 2026 Physics Chapters

These chapters appear moderately in JEE Main Physics, contribute around 0.5 to 0.8 questions per shift, and should be revised after completing the high-priority topics.

  • Work, Power and Energy
  • Electromagnetic Waves
  • Errors
  • Gravitation
  • Alternating Current

JEE Main 2026 Physics Low-Priority Chapters

The following chapters have shown lower question frequency and can be studied later if the student has limited time. They contribute approximately 0.2 to 0.5 questions per shift:

  • Kinematics (1D)
  • Kinematics (2D)
  • Simple Harmonic Motion
  • Elasticity
  • Electromagnetic Induction (limited parts)
  • Heat Transfer
  • Newton’s Laws of Motion
  • Centre of Mass
  • Circular Motion
  • Sound Waves
  • Wave on a String
  • Calorimetry
  • Magnetism
  • Vectors
  • Friction
  • Thermal Expansion

Even though the weightage is low, covering these topics at least once ensures there are no unexpected gaps during the exam.

JEE Main 2026 Physics Preparation Strategy

The following preparation approach helps students cover the JEE Main 2026 Physics syllabus in a planned and practical way.

  • Start by completing all the first-priority chapters thoroughly, as they make up a major part of the paper. Revise these topics multiple times to retain formulas and concepts.
  • Follow this with chapter-wise JEE Main previous year questions to understand question patterns and the exact type of variations asked from 2021 to 2025.
  • Prepare short notes for high-frequency formulas, including torque relations involving cross products or standard EM Wave equations. This makes revision faster during the last few weeks.
  • Attempt part-syllabus and full-syllabus mock tests regularly. Analyse all mistakes after each test to understand weak areas before the actual exam.
  • Follow the 333 revision strategy in the last nine days. This means spending three days each on Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Use this time to focus on formula revision and solving easy to medium questions, as such questions form around 80% of the actual paper.

**According to the 2026 admission rules at Lovely Professional University (LPU):** you **generally need to qualify LPUNEST for B.Tech admission**, because LPU uses **LPUNEST scores as the primary entrance criterion** for most B.Tech programmes. This exam also determines your **scholarship level**. However, **LPUNEST is *not strictly the only route***— **LPU also accepts a valid **JEE Main score** (or CUET in some cases) instead of LPUNEST for admission** if you meet the eligibility requirements (like 60% in Class 12 with Physics, Mathematics and English). In short: ✔ You **do *not* necessarily need LPUNEST** if you have an **accepted JEE Main score**. …
