IIT Kanpur JEE Advanced cutoff 2026 is likely to be more competitive in 2026 as the applicant pool grows. With a projected 6% rise in JEE Advanced test-takers, the closing ranks for these integrated and science programmes will likely move upward by 200–300 positions across most disciplines. Since admissions rely entirely on JEE Advanced ranks through JoSAA for top branches like CSE, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, and BS in Economics, candidates need lower ranks, below AIR 3600, while for other courses, the candidates can expect a slightly higher cutoff.

IIT Kanpur has the authority to determine the cutoff/ opening and closing ranks for various courses. The candidates who clear the cutoff specified by IIT Kanpur shall be considered for the admission process however not all the candidates who clear the cutoff may get admission in IIT Kanpur courses. The final selection of the candidates shall be based on the components specified by the institute.
For some courses, IIT Kanpur may conduct a separate written test and interview to select the candidates. For admission in UG engineering programmes such as B.Tech/ B.S, IIT Kanpur prepares a list of the opening and closing ranks based on the options mentioned by candidates in the counselling process conducted by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority). The opening and closing rank after each JoSAA round are published on the official website of JoSAA and IIT Kanpur.
The cutoff of IIT Kanpur may not be constant for various courses, as there may be changes in the cutoff every year. Students can refer to the previous year cutoffs of IIT Kanpur to get an estimate of the upcoming admission session’s cutoff for various courses.
In the JoSAA 2025 counselling, the closing rank for IIT Kanpur in Round 6 stood at 271 under the Gender-Neutral, All India category, while the opening rank began at 147. The cutoff trend for IIT Kanpur remained remarkably stable throughout the counselling process, consistently ranging between 270 and 271 from Rounds 1 to 5. This steady cutoff pattern reflects a strong and consistent demand for admission to IIT Kanpur’s premier programs, particularly in high-demand disciplines such as Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, where competition remains intense among top JEE Advanced rank holders nationwide.
In the JoSAA 2025 counselling, IIT Kanpur recorded an opening rank of 1,589 and a closing rank of 2,771 in Round 6 for a particular B.Tech specialization under the Gender-Neutral, All India category. The cutoff showed a slight upward trend, with the closing rank rising from 2,635 in Round 1 to 2,697 in Round 5, before settling at 2,771 in the final round. This gradual increase indicates growing competition and strong applicant interest in IIT Kanpur’s engineering programs, reflecting its consistent academic reputation, high placement rates, and demand among top JEE Advanced candidates nationwide.
Based on previous cutoff patterns, the projected JEE Advanced score range for IIT Kanpur admissions 2025 is expected to be 660–710 for the General category. In comparison, the 2024 cutoff ranged between 650–700, showing a slight upward shift due to increased competition and higher performance trends. For the OBC category, the projected range is around 600–650, similar to the previous year. These estimates are derived from consistent trends in JoSAA cutoff data and candidate performance, indicating strong demand for IIT Kanpur’s top programs such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
According to the Department of Management Sciences (DoMS) brochure, admission to the MBA program at IIT Kanpur typically requires a CAT percentile of 85–90 overall for popular specializations such as Finance and Marketing under the General category. For candidates belonging to the OBC category, the expected percentile range is around 75–80. These cutoffs may vary slightly each year depending on the number of applicants, difficulty level of the CAT exam, and overall performance trends. The DoMS selection process also considers academic background, work experience, and interview performance in addition to CAT scores.
In the CCMN 2025 counselling process, the closing rank for IIT Kanpur was recorded at 98 in the final round of allotments. The Round 1 closing rank began at 72, followed by a slight rise to 88 in Round 2, before stabilizing at 98 in the last round. This gradual increase reflects strong competition and limited seat availability in IIT Kanpur’s M.Sc. and related postgraduate programs. The consistent demand across all rounds highlights the institute’s academic excellence, research opportunities, and reputation for producing highly skilled graduates in science and technology disciplines through the CCMN admission process.
In the JoSAA 2025 counselling, IIT Kanpur’s Round 6 closing rank reached 6,161, marking a noticeable rise compared to 4,347 in 2024 for the same specialization under the General category. For the OBC category, the 2024 cutoff ranged between 4,500 and 6,500, indicating a similar trend of relaxation. The overall data suggests a 40% easing in rank cutoffs from the previous year, reflecting increased seat competition, changing candidate preferences, and possible variations in exam difficulty. Despite this shift, IIT Kanpur continues to attract top-performing candidates across engineering and science disciplines due to its strong academic standing.
For IIT Kanpur admissions 2025, the expected JEE Advanced score range for top B.Tech branches is projected to be 610–660, slightly higher than the 600–650 range in 2024, indicating a marginal rise in cutoff trends. The Mechanical Engineering branch is expected to fall within the 560–610 range, maintaining stability compared to previous years. These projections are based on past JoSAA cutoff data, candidate performance trends, and competition levels. The consistent rise in scores highlights IIT Kanpur’s growing demand among high-ranking aspirants, particularly for specializations like Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering.
In the JoSAA 2025 counselling, IIT Kanpur recorded a closing rank of 226 in the final round for a specific B.Tech specialization under the Gender-Neutral, All India category. The cutoff trend remained consistent throughout the process, starting at 181 in Round 1 and slightly rising to 209 in Round 2, before stabilizing at 226 in the last round. This steady progression indicates sustained competition and limited seat availability in one of IIT Kanpur’s most sought-after branches. The trend reflects the institute’s continued popularity and the strong preference among top JEE Advanced candidates for its core engineering programs.
In the IIT Kanpur JoSAA 2025 counselling, the closing rank reached 271, compared to 215 in 2023, indicating a moderate rise in cutoff positions. This slight inflation is largely attributed to the 30% drop in JEE Advanced qualifying marks, which decreased from 109 in 2023 to 76 in 2025. The lowered qualifying threshold allowed a larger pool of candidates to enter the merit list, resulting in a marginal relaxation in cutoff ranks. Despite this shift, IIT Kanpur continues to maintain high academic and competitive standards across its B.Tech programs, particularly in high-demand engineering branches.
In IIT Kanpur admissions, the OBC category cutoffs are generally about 1.5 to 2 times higher than those for the General category, reflecting reservation-based rank distribution. During JoSAA 2024 counselling, OBC closing ranks for top B.Tech programs ranged between 3,500 and 5,500. Based on Round 6 trends and competition patterns, the 2025 OBC cutoff is projected to fall between 4,000 and 6,000, indicating a modest rise from the previous year. This expected increase aligns with broader trends of growing participation and fluctuating difficulty levels in JEE Advanced, maintaining IIT Kanpur’s strong appeal among top engineering aspirants.
