In a move that surprised all, the nodal education body UGC has put non-existing universities of Uttar Pradesh in the list of autonomous colleges.
Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) and Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) do not technically exist.

Five autonomous colleges in UP are affiliated with GBTU whereas one institute has an affiliation from UPTU. What is more surprising, Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College of Gorakhpur which was upgraded as MMM University of Technology in 2103 has been listed as a college.
Both the GBTU and UPTU were names of the same university. Now it is known as APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University.

According to the list of autonomous colleges, five institutes affiliated to GBTU are-
- Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology,
- Institute of Engineering and Technology,
- Uttar Pradesh Textile Technological Institute,
- Bundelkhand Institute of Engineering and Technology
- and Madan Mohan Malaviya Engineering College
