IIT Bombay TechFest 2017 to Focus on Finding Digital Solutions to Development Issues

As a part of its TechFest 2017, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) will organise ‘Ideate’, a competition that aims to figure out digital solutions to development issues. More details about ‘Ideate’ are elaborated below.

About IIT Bombay’s Ideate: -

  • The main objective of 'Ideate' is to address some of the issues prevalent in society from a technical point of view while providing participants with real-life situations.
  • The competition is divided into three parts including sustainability, biotechnology and digitalization - the significant sectors which are facing real problems in India.
  • Primarily, students will be given tasks to solve pressing problems in the agriculture, education, energy and healthcare sectors through computerization where they will need to create prototypes of their idea.
  • Secondly, participants have to harness biotechnology with an objective to achieve goals such as sanitation and environmental conservation.
  • Finally, the participants will have to find steps to lower costs and increase productivity, particularly in rural trades, including agriculture and utilising renewable energy sources.
  • Thus, as a part of the competition, students will have to come with innovative and implementable solutions to societal problems and challenges.
  • The problem statements presented to students will be open-ended so that they are enabled to figure out problems themselves and then find solutions.
  • If necessary, participants can seek guidance and advice from lecturers at IIT Bombay.
  • IIT Bombay also allows the participants to use the laboratories for developing prototypes.
  • After the submission of abstracts, mentors will check them and guide the participants accordingly.
  • A total number of three participants from each of the three themes will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 3.2 lakh.
